A former Kentucky State Police detective has been charged with making false statements under oath about the destruction of evidence in a murder case he was investigating.

The U.S. attorney's office in Louisville said 41-year-old Charles J. Senters of Manchester was charged in an indictment unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Lexington.

The indictment alleges that during a hearing in July 2014, Senters falsely stated he had permission to destroy a telephone cord and knife.

Senters' lawyers didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Lawyers for the defendants in the case that Senters was investigating, stemming from the death of a federal informant, alleged the evidence could have shown someone else killed the man.
