The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new law banning a certain type of abortion in Kentucky.

The law prohibits "dilation and evacuation," a common procedure that is performed after 11 weeks of pregnancy.

The ACLU says the law is forcing patients to travel hundreds of miles out of state if they need the procedure, and for some women that is an insurmountable obstacle. The lawsuit argues the law imposes serious harm on women's health and dignity.

A spokeswoman for Governor Bevin says the lawsuit is disturbing, but not surprising. Communications Director Elizabeth Kuhn says lawmakers "overwhelmingly voted to safeguard unborn children against the gruesome practice of live dismemberment abortion."
