The law prohibits "dilation and evacuation," a common procedure that is performed after 11 weeks of pregnancy.
The ACLU says the law is
forcing patients to travel hundreds of miles out of state if they
need the procedure, and for some women that is an insurmountable
obstacle. The lawsuit argues the law imposes serious harm on women's
health and dignity.
A spokeswoman for Governor
Bevin says the lawsuit is disturbing, but not surprising.
Communications Director Elizabeth Kuhn says lawmakers "overwhelmingly
voted to safeguard unborn children against the gruesome practice of
live dismemberment abortion."
