A man has been arrested as a result of making threats with a knife and lawnmower blade.

The Massac County Sheriffs Office received a call Thursday of a man armed with a knife and lawnmower blade threatening to hurt anyone who came near him on Hillbrook Lane. Upon arrival the first deputy observed thirty-seven year old Michael Barnes approaching him.

After several verbal attempts to get Barnes to throw his weapons down, the deputy deployed his Taser. The Taser failed to make contact and as Barnes moved closer to the deputy, another deputy arrived and was able to make a second Taser deployment. Deputies say Barnes went to the ground but did not release his weapons and fought deputies for several minutes.

Two officers from the Brookport Police Department also arrived and Barnes was finally handcuffed. He had at least four edged weapons in his possession. Barnes was transported to the Massac County Detention Center and charged with possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $1,500 cash.
