Legislative leaders are hoping for more clarity in the wake of a judge's decision to strike down Illinois' pension overhaul as unconstitutional.

Labor unions and retirees sued over the overhaul Gov. Pat Quinn signed last year. The law reduces benefits for retirees, but also reduces employee contributions.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin says the ruling was expected. He's urging both parties to seek an expedited review before the Illinois Supreme Court. He says the legislature needs "certainty.''

Senate President John Cullerton says he believes there's a constitutional way to address Illinois' pension challenges. He says the need for reform is urgent, but the rule of law is absolute.

Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno says she hopes the high court finds the law constitutional or at least provides guidance.
