Authorities north of Seattle say a student opened fire in a high school cafeteria today, killing at least one person and wounding four other students. The gunman also died in the attack.

Police in Marysville say the shooter was a student at Marysville Pilchuck High School. There are no additional details on the gunman and the victims, or on what might have prompted the shooting.

A spokeswoman at Providence Everett medical center says four students were brought there -- three in "very critical'' condition and one who was considered stable enough to be taken to another medical center in Seattle. It's not clear if the people who died were among those brought to the medical center.

Police have been going room-by-room, searching the school about 30 miles north of Seattle, to make sure it was safe.

One student told a TV station (KING) that he was eating his lunch at a nearby table when he heard the gunshots. He says the shooter "had a little gun in his hand'' -- and that he could see "the flash from the muzzle.''

Another student said the shooter "was just staring down every one of his victims as he shot them.''
