UPDATE:  Joint Base Andrews indicates there may be some confusion over an active shooting drill that was underway, leading to a possible mistake in the drill that led officials on the base to believe there was an actual shooting underway.

There was apparently not an active shooting situation underway, but rather a portion of the drill that somehow got coded and paged out on the base as a real shooting. A press conference at Joint Base Andrews will be held shortly.

Joint Base Andrews had been tweeting on their official twitter account for more than an hour of an actual active shooter situation at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility on the base.

The shooting situation wasn't just a mistake for the public.  It made its way up the ladder within the government. At one point, Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson told a Senate Committee that he was testifying at that he may have to leave the hearing to address the "unfolding situation", which has now been determined to be a drill.

The base lock down was officially lifted, with the exception of the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility.  The reason for the exception is not yet known.

PREVIOUS STORY: Joint Base Andrews tweeted Thursday that the base was on lockdown due to a report of an active shooter.

The tweet instructed all personnel at the base in Washington's Maryland suburbs to shelter in place and says more information will be released as it comes.

A second tweet from the base said the incident was ongoing at the Malcolm Grow Medical Facility and first responders were on the scene. It instructed everyone to continue to shelter in place, a precaution meant to keep people safe while remaining indoors.

Joint Base Andrews is located about 20 miles outside of downtown Washington, D.C. and hosts aircraft used by President Obama.

Homeland Secretary Jeh Johnson has stated to The Associated Press: `Unfolding situation' at Andrews Air Force Base.
