The Supreme Court's four liberal justices have been in the majority in virtually all the year's biggest cases.

To form a majority, they have found a fifth vote in Justice Anthony Kennedy and — more surprisingly — Chief Justice John Roberts.

Justice Clarence Thomas was even their partner in one 5-4 ruling.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her three liberal colleagues were on the winning side in ruling for same-sex marriage, preserving a key part of the health care overhaul and allowing certain lawsuits to fight housing discrimination.

In all three cases, those justices didn't speak a single word, but happily signed on to opinions written by either Roberts or Kennedy.
