Apache attack helicopters from Fort Campbell have entered the battle for Mosul.

The 101st Airborne Division is supporting Iraqi security forces in their push to retake the city from ISIS fighters.

Major General Gary Volesky, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, says the Apaches are being used at night to strike targets from a distance.

"The initial operation, as you've seen the movement, has gone pretty well. The Iraqis are ahead of where I thought they would be when this operation started. They continue to move," Volesky said. "No doubt, the Iraqi security forces have the momentum, and they know it. So, they are as motivated to get to Mosul as we are to help them get there."

Adding U.S. attack helicopter crews to the unfolding combat is an extra element of risk for American troops.
