A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to ramp up work along a section of KY 121 at Murray starting Monday, May 4.
The project to widen KY 121 starts at the intesection with South 12th “Street (US 641) and extends northward to Bailey Road, a distance of about one mile. A considerable amount of utility work has been ongoing along this section for the last year.
The contractor will be widening the road to 4-lanes with a center turn lane near Murray State University’s CFSB Center. The contractor will be coordinating the phasing of work with the university to minimize traffic disruptions for special events.
When completed the new road should help reduce traffic congestion, particularly during CFSB events.
This section of KY 121 includes intersections with Gilbert Graves Circle/Walmart Drive, Paramount Drive, Waldrop Drive, North 16th Street, KY 774/Coldwater Road/Lowes Drive and Bailey Road. Approximately 11,000 vehicles travel this section of KY 121 in an average day.
Drivers should use appropriate caution where equipment, flaggers, and construction personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow. Motorists should be alert for changes in traffic configuration to facilitate various construction activities along the work zone.
Jim Smith Contracting Company, LLC, of Grand Rivers is the prime contractor on this $6.5 million highway improvement project. The estimated completion date is November 15, 2016.
