Snow may be as popular a topic of discussion as the Super Bowl this weekend.

Forecasters say rain and snow could be present for much of the weekend across the region, beginning as rain on Saturday. By Saturday night, snow is expected to mix in and continue to be possible all day Sunday.

Sunday's snow accumulations are more likely to occur in southern Illinois, especially north of the I-24/I-57 junction. So far, western Kentucky's outlook suggests maybe a half inch of snow in places, but a more definitive accumulation outlook will come into focus later on Friday and Saturday.

By Sunday night, gusting northwest winds will cause temperatures to dive into the teens with lingering light snow possible. Temperatures on Monday will stay below freezing in spite of sunshine.

Highway crews plan to pre-treat area roadways Friday in anticipation of winter weather. In addition to pre-treating which will start on Friday morning, crews will prepare a few trucks in each county to be available to roll out and respond quickly to whatever arrives over the weekend.
