A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday evening to discuss the long-term future of the Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has scheduled the meeting from 4-7 pm at the UK Agriculture Extension Office at 803 U.S. Highway 60 East, in Smithland.

KYTC District 1 Spokesman Keith Todd said the meeting is part of a study that will examine the needs and feasibility of repairing or replacing the bridge.

“Our engineers plan to introduce the study and to seek input from the public on the issues that need to be considered by the long-term study,” Todd said.  “The public meeting will feature exhibits that will outline the proposed study area, existing conditions, and provide an opportunity for public to make comments.”

The U.S. 60 Cumberland River bridge at Smithland, also known as the Lucy Jefferson Lewis Memorial Bridge and the Smithland Bridge, is an 1,817-foot structure that opened to traffic in 1931. About 5,500 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

While no construction is planned for now, public comments will help engineers as they make plans to maintain the reliability of the bridge.

A court reporter will be available to receive oral comments during the meeting. A comment sheet will be distributed for written comments. Written statements will be accepted at the meeting and for 15 days after the meeting.

In accordance with the American with Disabilities Act ADA, anyone with a disability who will require assistance in order to attend either meeting can notify Mike McGregor of the necessary requirements no later than Tuesday, June 18, by calling (270)898-2431.
