Many residents and businesses in the Marshall County area were without power on Sunday afternoon due to a snake that interfered with West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative’s Benton Substation.

The outage lasted from 11:45 am to 1:17 pm and affected approximately 7,153 cooperative members.

“We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage that we incurred Sunday at our Benton Substation,” said President and CEO David Smart. “As part of the current rebuild ongoing in our Benton Substation, we plan to install a TransGard Systems fence that is designed to deter snakes and other intrusive, climbing animals from reaching areas where outages can originate.”

West Kentucky RECC members are encouraged to report outages immediately by calling 270-247-1321 or 1-877-4WKRECC. Automated phone lines are available 24 hours a day and will direct outage reports to emergency crews.
