The National Weather Service Office in Paducah says the potential for a significant severe weather event Saturday and/or Saturday night is increasing.

Extreme instability will develop across the region beneath a strong capping inversion Friday into Saturday. If and when the inversion is overcome, very intense thunderstorm development is likely.

Wind fields would support supercells or a line of severe storms. All forms of severe weather will be possible. The extreme instability could support very large hail and significant severe wind gusts.

In addition to the severe threat, if storms can form an east to west oriented line, persistent heavy rains could lead to flash flooding.

The only question at this point is how and when the inversion will be broken. There are numerous possibilities ranging from a complex of storms that moves into the area as early as Friday night, to development near the cold front as it moves into the area Saturday night.

With the tendency for folks to gather outside over the holiday weekend, the impact of this potential severe weather event is likely to be greater than most. Please monitor the latest forecasts of this potential severe weather event and be prepared for activation should it become necessary.
