A protest took place Friday evening in Benton in response to recent events around the country.

Dwaylon and Hope Edwards organized the 5:30 event after attending the protest in Paducah last weekend. At least 100 people attended the event to share a message of peace, equality and unity.

Hope Edwards said the organized the event because, "We want to come together and show our support for People of Color in our Community. We want to show them that we see them, we hear them, and we understand what they are going through. And if we don't we sure will try. We want to promote love and show them, that their lives matter. That we see an injustice and we will stand with them."

They worked with local law enforcement to get the entire city block closed off, and marched around the courthouse carrying signs that read, "no justice no peace," "color is not a crime," "stop the injustice," and "history has its eyes on you."

Afterwards, Benton Police thanked everyone who attended for their behavior, saying, "This is the type of message that we should all get behind and support. We are proud of our community."

In the aftermath of recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, protests have taken place in many cities and towns demanding justice for their families, while advocating that black lives matter and speaking out against police brutality.
