Olympian Shannon Miller Coming to Graves County
By West Kentucky Star Staff
MAYFIELD, KY - The Graves County Eagle Foundation is pleased to announce its annual "Night With A Champion" speaker. The most decorated gymnast in American history, Shannon Miller, will speak in the Eagles' Nest of Graves County High School at 7 pm Saturday, June 14. General admission tickets are $10 each and will go on sale Monday, May 5, at Graves County High School or call (270) 856-6266. Miller's presentation will conclude Graves County's Relay for Life activities and will reflect her inspiring story as an exceptional Olympic athlete and cancer survivor.
Shannon Miller is the only American to rank among the top 10 all-time gymnasts and is the only female athlete to be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame – twice! She has won an astounding 59 international and 49 national competition medals. More than half of those medals are gold. At the 1996 Olympic Games, she led the "Magnificent Seven" to the U.S. Women's first-ever team gold and for the first time for any American gymnast, she captured gold on the balance beam.
In 2010, Miller launched her company Shannon Miller Lifestyle: Health and Fitness for Women, which empowers women to make their health a priority through programs, education and awareness. Her foundation also is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. In 2011, Miller was diagnosed with a malignant germ cell tumor, a rare form of ovarian cancer. Surgeons successfully removed her baseball-sized tumor and followed surgery with nine weeks of chemotherapy. Now cancer free, Miller continues to be a strong advocate for awareness and early detection.
Prior to the Graves County Eagle Foundation's "Night With A Champion," an exclusive Shannon Miller meet-and-greet reception will be held at 4:30 pm in the GCHS cafe for event sponsors. Various levels of sponsorship are available and include photo opportunities, event VIP tickets, general admission tickets, corporate logo or promotional advertising, and preferred parking.
