Murray State University will become a tobacco-free campus effective in August.

The tobacco policy approved by the board of regents on Friday applies to faculty, staff, students and visitors to the main campus, and its regional campuses in Henderson, Hopkinsville, Fort Campbell, Madisonville and Paducah.

When the policy goes into full force on August 5, personal tobacco use will be prohibited on property owned, operated, leased, occupied or controlled by the university, including vehicles on university property.

The rule applies to e-cigarettes as well as cigarettes, cigars, pipes and unlit tobacco such as snuff or dip.

Some recommendations will take effect March 15, with no smoking allowed within 25 feet of building openings and major air intake vents.
