The Murray Calloway Endowment for Health Care is sponsoring a public forum on legal issues for patients and caregivers on Thursday, June 11 from 6:30-8 pm at the Calloway County Public Library.

William C. (Chip) Adams, III, a Murray attorney, is the featured speaker, and a question and answer session will follow. Constance Alexander, recipient of the 2014 Governor’s Award in the Arts for her work in the media, will facilitate the discussion.

The forum is the third in a series of public information sessions designed for family caregivers. Some featured topics include the importance of wills; differences between living wills, advance medical care directives, and health care surrogates; planning strategies associated with caregiving, assisted living, nursing homes and Medicaid.

Also included on the June 11 agenda is a brief introduction to “When Love Gets Tough: The Nursing Home Decision,” by Doug Manning. Hospital chaplain Kerry Lambert has found the book to be an effective tool for families struggling with decision-making about nursing homes.

A limited number of free copies of “When Love Gets Tough” will be available at the Calloway County Public Library starting June 11, in preparation for a book discussion group on June 25.

The community forum and book discussion program are funded in part by an Arts Access Assistance Grant to the Endowment for Health Care. The grant is through the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, which is supported by state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Securing an Arts Access Assistance Grant was a community effort, with input and support from a range of stakeholders, including the local Senior Citizens Center, Murray Art Guild, Jackson Purchase Dance Company, Cheri Theatres and the Calloway County Public Library.

In addition to activities on June 11 and June 25, Arts Access Grant funds have supported a yearlong series of hands-on experiences in the arts focused on caregiving, and featuring programming for individuals 65 and older, as well as caregivers of all ages.
