Meteorologists held a briefing Wednesday on their latest models, as they continue to monitor the possibility of freezing rain across portions of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois and southwest Indiana.
The activity may begin around daybreak on Friday and continue through the day.
Western Kentucky and the Ohio River counties of southern Illinois are still expected to experience temperatures above freezing on Friday and get all rain through the day.
The best chance for icy accumulations will be north and west of a line from Greenville, Missouri, through DuQuoin, Carbondale, Mt. Vernon and McLeansboro in southern Illinois.
Most of the affected areas could see about a tenth of an inch of ice, especially in trees and on cold elevated surfaces. Slippery sidewalks, parking lots, bridges and overpasses can be expected.
Road conditions will vary depending on traffic and pre-treatment conditions and effectiveness.
Meteorologist described that their worst case scenario for the affected area might include up to a quarter inch of ice for some locations. If that occurred, the risk of isolated power outages could be added to the travel difficulties.
