The Kentucky State Police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency are partnering on Saturday to let Kentuckians dispose of potentially dangerous medicines from their homes.
Collections will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Kentucky State Police Post 1 in Hickory, and at 15 other locations statewide.
Prescriptions can be dropped off in the original container or can be disposed of by putting them directly in the drop off box. Illegal substances such as marijuana and methamphetamine, as well as injectables and syringes will not be accepted.
Last year, citizens across the U.S. safely disposed of 456 tons of unneeded medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. KSP collected 1,648 pounds during two take-back events.
According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. "Cleaning out old prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, kitchen drawers and beside tables can help reduce the diversion, misuse and abuse of these substances, including opioid painkillers," says Sanders. "When in doubt, throw it out."
