The Marshall County FOCUS (Facilitators of Community Unity and Support) group held a healing and remembrance event Wednesday evening at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville, one year after the shooting at Marshall County High School.

Rev. K. Alan Miller, Senior Pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Benton, emcee for evening, opened the event with greeting and a prayer. A large crowd braved sub-freezing wind chills to participate.

Rev. Tim Bertram, with God's Graffiti Ministry, shared a scripture passage and then painted a picture of Jesus, while music was playing. Cody Myers then sang a song, "Strong Together", which he and Rev. Brian Brophy wrote. Myers is the Worship Leader for First Missionary Baptist Church in Benton, and Brophy is the Youth Minister at the Reidland Church of Christ.

At the conclusion of the event, two chinese lanterns, one orange, and one blue, were released into the night sky. Rev. Miller commented as they ascended, "the smallest amount of light can penetrate the greatest amount of darkness, however the greatest amount of darkness, can never subdue the smallest amount of light." He then dismissed the crowd.

Three North Marshall Middle School students, Gracie Gideon, Scout Sandlin, and Bailey Allred, spoke with West Kentucky Star about what they hope was accomplished with the event.

Gideon said, "I think that with this happening, we should all come together as a community, and love each other more and more every day."

Sandlin explained, "I think that after tonight's gathering, we will hug each other a little bit closer, and love each other a little bit more."

Allred added, "I think the same thing, we should love each other more after everything that's happened, I think we all, the community should come closer together."

Rev. Miller also spoke with West Kentucky Star about the event. He said, "it went well, and the objectives were met, to remember the precious lives of Preston Cope and Bailey Holt."

After the event, local churches provided refreshments for those that attended.
