Representatives from Graves County Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) are in Atlanta, Georgia this week, joining nearly 2,000 substance use prevention and treatment specialists from around the world for CADCA’s (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) 16th annual Mid-Year Training Institute.

The week-long training will teach participants how to address one of our nation’s biggest public health challenges – drug use. CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute is a one-of-a-kind intensive training opportunity, offering more than 100 ninety-minute, half-day and full day courses geared towards helping participants find solutions to their community’s toughest substance use problems.

"The Mid-Year is a unique professional development opportunity for anyone trying to prevent and reduce drug use, and its related problems, in their community,” said Gen. Arthur T. Dean, CADCA's Chairman and CEO. “After four days of intensive training, participants will return to their communities with new skills and strategies, and a clearer roadmap to create environments where young people can thrive.”

CADCA’s Mid-Year will cover a wide range of topics, such as how to prevent prescription drug abuse, create tobacco-free environments, reduce impaired driving and develop policies to reduce marijuana use. The coalition representatives will hear from several federal leaders, including Acting Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Richard Baum, Acting Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration Chuck Rosenberg, and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Kana Enomoto.

Eight Mayfield & Graves County youth will take part in CADCA’s youth-led, adult-guided civic engagement training, the National Youth Leadership Initiative (NYLI), where they’ll learn how to become drug prevention advocates and powerful community leaders. These youth were selected to go by submitting an essay, teacher recommendations, and academic standing. Traveling to Atlanta, Georgie are MHS seniors Minlie Glover, Journi Reeves, Tony Aragonez, Jazlin Guerrero, GCHS seniors Courtney Williams, Jackson Purcell GCHS junior Kelsey Davidson, and GCHS sophomore Parker Jackson.

Graves County High School sophomore, Parker Jackson said, "I want to go to CADCA because in high school I have seen how substance abuse has affected my peers and I would like to learn more about ways to prevent or avoid that as much as possible!"

CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute will take place this week at the Marriot Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia. Visit cadca.org/events/myti2017 to learn more.
