A woman who worked at the Livingston County Attorney's office appeared in court on Wednesday, facing charges that she stole money from the county.

According to Fifth District Commonwealth's Attorney Zac Greenwell, the special prosecutor in the case, 48-year-old Christi Whitman faces a charge of theft by unlawful taking over $10,000. The money - over $20,000 - was allegedly taken from the county's restitution fund.

Whitman was in Livingston Circuit Court for an arraignment, where a not guilty plea was entered by her attorney.

Whitman worked in the office under former County Attorney Billy Riley, and continued working there after Riley retired and Raymond McGee was named to the position last October. She hasn't worked in the office since early this year.

Greenwell said McGee spotted some discrepancies and contacted the Attorney General's office.

Whitman is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 am on October 17.
