While most of the region had a dry drive to work on Monday morning, a narrow band of counties had to deal with torrential rains and flash flooding.

About 5:30 a.m., the National Weather Service in Paducah issued flash flood warnings for Massac, Pope, southern Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in southern Illinois as a narrow band of intense rain trained over the same area that saw heavy rain since Sunday evening.

This morning's downpours dumped a quick two inches or rain on ditches and streams already full with Sunday rains. Radar indicated that some parts of Massac and the other southernmost counties had received four inches of rain or more since Sunday.

The Monday morning storms slowly crossed over the Ohio River after 7 a.m., and a flash flood warning was issued for Ballard and northwest McCracken counties.

The storms pushed into Pope and Livingston counties within the hour, and the flood warnings expired after 9 a.m.

A slight chance of thunderstorms returns to much of the region this afternoon, followed by increasing thunderstorm chances tonight, especially after midnight. While a few strong to severe storms cannot be ruled out, the primary concerns include lightning and locally heavy rain.
