Standing in a crowded room of supporters at the Graves County Clerk's office, current City Councilman Steven Elder announced on Wednesday he's running for the office of Mayor.

"I believe the torch needs to be passed to the next generation of leaders," stated Elder who is 38 years old. "We need to bring new and fresh ideas to City Hall and make great attempts at gaining meaningful jobs in Mayfield."

"I am a business man who has worked in the private sector in banking, manufacturing, sales and finance. I know how to create and make our city attractive for jobs," Elder said. "We also need to rebuild our neighborhoods. In the last few years, we have torn down more houses than we have built. That trend has to stop and I will make every effort to offer tax incentives to developers to rebuild some areas of the city."

Elder was appointed to the Mayfield City Council in December 2016. He is the former Board Chair of the Mayfield-Graves County Chamber of Commerce for the 2015-2017 terms. He still serves on the Board. Elder is a member of the Rotary Club of Mayfield. He is the leading voice and advocate for the YES for Mayfield group that brings positive growth and change in the community such as the recent alcohol vote in June of 2016. Elder also spearheaded the Young Professionals Group through the local Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the service in Mayfield and Graves County, Elder served five years on the Leitchfield City Council. During his tenure, he was part of a team that brought in several manufacturing jobs and helped secure funding for a $5 million aquatic center. Elder accomplished this before moving home to Mayfield in 2013.

Elder graduated from Graves County High School and holds a MBA from Murray State University.
