A Graves County couple were arrested Saturday after their toddler child was reportedly found playing near the road.

According to the Graves County Sheriff's Department, deputies went to a home in Water Valley around 11 a.m. A caller told dispatch a child was playing near U.S. Highway 45 South, and a passersby had stopped to help.

Deputies say the parents, Diane Peoples and Richard Crider, were asleep and did not know the child was outside. Deputies arrested them and charged both with first-degree wanton endangerment. The child, who was unharmed, was released to the care of a family member.

Peoples and Crider were taken to the Graves County Jail.
