Woman Charged with Stealing Wallet at Store

A Metropolis woman was arrested Sunday, after police said she stole a man's wallet at a grocery store.

The Metropolis Police Department says officers responded to Big John’s, after an 98-year-old man dropped his wallet and it was stolen. After reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, an officer recognized the suspect as 48-year-old Christina Avila of Metropolis.

Officers went to Avila's home and spoke with her. She reportedly denied taking the wallet until she was shown the video evidence. Officers then found the man's wallet in her purse. 

Avila was arrested for theft of lost or mislaid property and booked into the Massac County Detention Center.
