Our area got hit Wednesday with what forecasters are calling an extremely rare snow event, dumping several inches of the white stuff during the evening and overnight hours, and creating hazardous driving conditions which prompted many area schools to close.

Snow, occasionally mixed with light freezing rain and sleet fell through the night, with Snow accumulation of 1.8 inches reported early Thursday morning in Paducah.

Forecaster Rick Shanklin with the National Weather Service office in Paducah says it's extremely rare to see this kind of weather move into our area so early in the year. "This is a very rare event," He said. "Only a couple other times in years past have we had an event of this significance, so quite rare indeed."

Records indicate that only on two days in 80 years has it snowed two inches or more before December in Paducah (Nov. 28, 1958 -- 4 inches; Oct.  30, 1993 -- 2 inches).

Travel this morning is reportedly slick and hazardous in spots, and clouds will likely slow progress of any melting on roadways.
