He is known as the lead singer of the popular Contemporary Christian group NewSong, and this weekend he will be at a church in Metropolis.

Singer and songwriter Russ Lee will be at Life Church Eastland at all three services Saturday night and Sunday morning.

What some may not realize is that Lee is also an ordained minister who says he loves not only singing, but speaking about Christ as well.

Lee tells West Kentucky Star, "I was a drug dealer... I came from a broken home.  I had a father who was an alcoholic, who loved us but he started drinking to try to escape from a bad situation at home. My mother was mentally ill.  My mother died of an accidental drug overdose in 1997, so needless to say our house was not a home, so I found myself trying to survive, and through that process I became a drug dealer.  And I realized through just a series of really bad days that you know there has to be more to life than this.  And I cried out and said 'God I don't know who you are but if you're really God and really there, I can't find you but maybe you can find me.'  That weekend my life was changed and someone literally came to my door... no one ever came to my door...someone came to my door, stood on my steps, and shared Christ with me."

Lee went on to say that the very day he cried out to God (a Thursday) was the very day that the "someone" felt he needed to go speak with him.  Lee says the guy informed him that he prayed about it, and then came to his front door a few days later during the weekend.  He says his life was changed forever on that day.

Life Church Eastland Pastor Ryan Anderson tells West Kentucky Star "Over the past summer I've gotten really close with Russ and his family.  He's been kind a mentor of mine, and we have been trying to get him to come for years now after running into him quite a bit at XTREME in Gatlinburg (Tennessee)."

Anderson went on to say he was very excited to have Lee at the church, and is hoping everyone from the community will come and hear what Lee has to say.

Anderson mentioned "say" because even though Lee will be singing, he is actually a guest minister this weekend at the church.  Lee will be speaking at all three services, and says he is very excited at the opportunity to share his heart with people in spoken word, as well as by singing some familiar songs many may know.

Lee originally joined NewSong in 1994, as the lead vocalist for the albums "People Get Ready" and "Love Revolution". After NewSong released "Arise My Love... Best of NewSong", Lee left the group, releasing his first solo album, "Words in Time" in 2000, which contained the Top 5 hits "I Smile" and "Live What I Believe".

Lee followed up with "The Second Mile" in 2003 and Christmas album "Hear Those Bells" in 2004. Russ Lee's final album as a solo artist, "Pictures on Mantles", in late 2004, which contained previous hits from his time with NewSong, reworked hits from his tenure with TRUTH and NewSong, and several new songs.

In 2008, Lee announced that he was rejoining NewSong. His first album back with the group, "Give Yourself Away", was released in early 2010.

Lee will be singing and speaking at Life Church Eastland located at 716 East 3rd Street, in Metropolis.

Service times are:

Sunday: 9 am and 10:40 am
