Three people were killed Wednesday morning in a crash on Interstate 57 in Union County.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened shortly after 2 a.m., just past mile marker 32 in the southbound lanes of I-57. Police said four people were traveling in a vehicle going the wrong way and ran head on into a semi. 

A man, woman and child were killed in the crash. The driver of the passenger vehicle was air lifted from the scene. The driver of the semi was not seriously injured.

The interstate was shut down for about seven hours while the investigation was conducted. 

Police have not yet released the names of those involved, but say charges are pending.
