The Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to be a busy one on Illinois roads, so the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that non-emergency roadwork will be suspended, where possible, from 3 pm on Friday, May 22 until 12 am on Tuesday, May 26.
Lanes will be opened where possible, in an effort to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion for holiday travelers. Drivers should be alert, since lane closures in some work zones will remain in effect.
Please slow down, eliminate distractions, and use extra caution while driving through all work zones. Work zone speed limits remain in effect wherever they are posted.
The only work zones that won't come down in extreme southern Illinois are listed below:
UNION COUNTY:
I-57 Southbound between milepost 27-23, where paving work is ongoing. Traffic is reduced to one lane, and the entrance/exit ramps at milepost 24 near Gondola for US Highway 51 are closed.
WILLIAMSON COUNTY:
IL Route13 (Division Street) at Carterville, where intersection reconstruction is ongoing. Division Street south of IL 13 is reduced to one lane - one way southbound traffic is permitted.
