A southern Illinois judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a man accused of a Carbondale slaying more than seven years ago.

KFVS-TV reports that Elijah Lacy's trial was abruptly ended Tuesday because of an unspecified conflict of interest. Lacy has been appointed a new attorney.

Additional details were not immediately available, and it was unclear how soon 29-year-old Lacy may be retried.

Jackson County authorities say 21-year-old Falon Taylor died in 2007 after Lacy broke into a Carbondale home and fired shots into a bedroom where the Marion woman was sleeping.

Lacy has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer says there's no DNA evidence to prove he was ever in the home.
