A Metropolis man was arrested Tuesday after police say he assaulted a woman at her home and fled the scene.

Metropolis officers responded to an alarm at a home in the 1200 block of Ferry Street. Officers said that as they were arriving they observed a vehicle leaving the area.

One officer went to the home while another officer attempted to catch up to the vehicle. The victim at the home told the officer that when she had answered the door earlier, she was assaulted by a man she knew as Larry, and that she wanted to file a complaint.

Officers later found the vehicle at the home of 49-year-old Lawrence W. Williams of Metropolis. Officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.  Police said Williams refused to submit to the field sobriety tests.

A computer check also revealed that Williams had a revoked drivers license.

Williams was arrested for battery, DUI and driving with a revoked license. He was booked into the Massac County Detention Center.
