A Metropolis man was arrested Friday morning on drug and weapons charges.

Massac County Sheriff Ted Holder says deputies responded at around 1:30 a.m. to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Massac Creek Road. As a deputy arrived on scene he saw a vehicle parked in the middle of the road as a passenger threw something from the car into a ditch.

The passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, 30-year-old Michael Russell of Metropolis, had a backpack that was found to contain about eight pounds of marijuana. A search of the area around the vehicle also revealed a handgun.

Russell was taken to the Massac County Detention Center and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver more than 2,000 grams but less than 5,000 grams.
