The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has formally notified Honeywell of a violation in how the company classified a chemical leak last October.

The company originally classified the October 26 release of UF6 as a "plant emergency", but in a Notice of Violation the NRC informed Honeywell that the leak should have been classified as an "alert." The NRC report also says the plant properly mitigated the release, and did not cause any danger to the community.

In a letter to employees at the plant, Plant Manager Jim Pritchett said the notice did not come as a surprise. “as expected, the NRC notified us that they have identified an apparent violation related to last October’s UF6 incident. This pending NOV is a result of the NRC’s previously announced conclusion that we did not properly classify the event at the time it occurred and does not reflect any new findings. The NRC again said that we properly mitigated the release and that the release did not endanger the community.”

Pritchett said company officials and union representatives are still in negotiations as a work stoppage continues at the plant.

Honeywell Spokesman Peter Dalpe said a tentative date for the resumption of face-to-face bargaining on a new union contract has been set for Feb. 4.
