Demolition of Locks and Dam 52 on the Ohio River is scheduled to begin in a few weeks.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office shared information on their Facebook page, saying they were made aware that demolition of Dam 52 will begin after river levels drop and stabilize.

The project is estimated to take two years, and there will likely be blasting at noon every weekday, when river levels allow.

Safety procedures require all river traffic to be closed upstream to the Brookport Bridge for at least 2 hours prior to blasting.

Those who may be boating should take note, and everyone else should remain aware of the work when they hear the explosions.

Completion and opening of the Olmsted Locks and Dam in August 2018 has made Locks and Dam 52 and 53 unnecessary.

Locks and Dam 52 has been in service since 1928.
