While we end November on a warm note, there are changes unfolding that some meteorologists say could bring a widespread very cold air mass into the US next week.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service are saying this cold air mass is first going to arrive in Alaska this upcoming weekend with some spots in that state plunging to 40 degrees below zero, which is well below normal for early December.

After that, the cold air is forecast to dive into the western US during the first half of next week and then it’ll likely blast into the middle and eastern US late next week.

In fact, by the time Saturday, December 10th rolls around, there may be colder-than-normal conditions all the way from Alaska to the southeastern US, according to the National Weather Service.

Exactly how cold remains to be seen, but at least one computer model (pictured) calls for temperatures in Kentucky and Tennessee to be as much as 20 degrees or more below normal.  The average high in Paducah during December is around 46 degrees, with the average low at around 29 degrees.

Beyond that, it looks like this colder pattern will also have some staying power later in the month of December.
