The Ballard County Sheriff's Office reports that they have recently received a few verified identity theft reports from residents regarding income tax returns that someone has fraudulently filed in their name.

The victims receive a legitimate letter from the IRS and/or the Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. Sometimes the letters are for refunds and sometimes they are for money owed. If you receive a letter from one of these agencies that you feel is in error, the sheriff's office says your first step is to contact the agency allegedly being represented in the letter directly, using a legitimate phone number off of IRS.gov or the State Revenue Cabinet website.

Those agencies will then probably refer you to your local law enforcement agency so they can make a report that they are requiring you send in with your case.

Keep in mind that even if the letter says that you are going to receive a refund, the refund will not be deposited in to your account, but the bank account of the individual that filed a return using your identification, according to the sheriff's office.
