Illinois State Police were alerted about the incident at 8:20 a.m.
The aircraft reportedly had mechanical problems and the pilot brought it down near Mount Vernon in Jefferson County, about 80 miles east of St. Louis.
The plane reportedly hit a guardrail during the landing, but the pilot was not injured.
