The US Department of Energy's Office of Enviromental Management announced Thursday that Paducah Independent Schools will receive a grant award to revitalize six acres of unused school property into a green infrastructure of solar panels.
The panels will generate clean energy for the community while teaching the next generation the importance of being environmentally conscious of clean energy use.
The total estimated value for this grant is $1.325 million.
The grant is part of an $18.9 million package aiming to reinvest in communities impacted by decades of nuclear defense and research missions, and are now dealing with environmental cleanup sites.
The Steelworkers Charitable & Educational Organization of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will receive a grant award for the Portsmouth DOE facility, but part of those funds will also be spent on the Paducah cleanup site.
Paducah's gaseous diffusion plant produced enriched uranium from 1952 until 2013.
