A Murray man was arrested Monday after fleeing police on a mule, his second such arrest in three days.

On Saturday night Murray police were called to an alcohol establishment where 39-year-old Jonathan Mason had been asked to leave but refused. Mason was outside, sitting on a mule when officers arrived.  Officers asked Mason to stop, but he reportedly refused.

Officers said Mason resisted when they tried to place him under arrest.  Witnesses told police they saw Mason whip the mule at a different establishment an “unnecessary amount” of times, in addition to other ways of mistreating the animal.

Mason was arrested and lodged in the Calloway County Jail on charges including alcohol intoxication, disorderly conduct and cruelty to animals.

On Monday afternoon, officers were called to the area where the mule was stabled, and saw Mason riding the mule down a roadway. They said Mason seemed to be intoxicated.

Mason fled on the animal and a small chase ensued, but was apprehended a short time later in the Hih Burger parking lot.  He was charged again with cruelty to animals and fleeing or evading. He was lodged in the Calloway County Jail.
