Metropolis Police have made an arrest in the hit-and-run of a child.

Officers arrested 39-year-old Kayla S. Forthman of Metropolis in connection with the crash. She is charged with felony leaving the scene of an injury crash, failure to give aid or information, and failure to yield.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 1st, at the intersection of 8th and Butler Streets in Metropolis. Police said that an SUV pulled away from a stop sign and collided with an electric scooter ridden by a 14-year-old girl who was riding through the intersection. The SUV hit the child and the scooter, but did not stop.

Home surveillance video captured the collision. That video, combined with the Flock camera system, allowed officers to identify a license plate number, which pointed them to Forthman. Additional evidence collected led to her arrest.

Forthman was processed at the Massac County Detention Center, but police said it was a “non-detainable offense” and she was released on a notice to appear.
