Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers had hoped the work zone could be removed along a busy 4-mile section of I-24 in Paducah during heavy holiday traffic. However, rain delays have forced the barriers to stay in place.
Instead, one westbound lane will remain closed from the U.S. 60 Exit 4 overpass to the KY 305 Exit 3 overpass. Traffic generally begins merging into one lane at exit 7.
Another work zone on the U.S. 51 Ohio River Cairo Bridge that connects Kentucky and Illinois will remain up during the July 4th holiday weekend. The bridge is restricted to one lane traffic controlled by an automated signal with a maximum load width of 8 feet 6 inches.
Holiday travelers should consider an alternate route through southern Illinois or via the Dorena-Hickman Ferry.
Finally, the long-running project on I-24 from Eddyville to Cadiz will continue to slow down traffic in the lakes area from exits 52 to 65.
