West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Clemens Fine Arts Center will host a panel discussion about socialism on Saturday. The panel discussion, which is part of the center's new Exposure Series, will begin at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

A century ago, many cities in the United States elected socialist mayors and socialist ideas have influenced important federal programs like Social Security and Medicaid. This panel discussion will explore a new movement towards socialism in the United States and look at it through the lenses of economics, politics, sociology and ethics.

Expert panelists for the discussion will be WKCTC's Dr. Kevin Gericke, professor of economics and leadership and David Nickell, professor of philosophy and sociology and Murray State University's Dr. Drew Seib, associate professor of political science.

The center's Exposure Series focuses on enabling audiences and artists to explore ideas about the world with an interdisciplinary and more education-based approach.

"I want this discussion to be just that, a discussion." Says Todd Birdsong, the Clemens Fine Arts Center director. "Words and labels are so loaded in our current political and social climate and it is easy to dismiss an idea as being too extreme, or confusing it with a different association," he said. "I believe this idea in particular needs some clarification, and I hope the evening sheds some light and new information on the topic."
