The University of Tennessee Volunteers and University of Kentucky Wildcats will soon take to the football field for the annual rivalry game. Before the teams meet up on the gridiron, the American Red Cross invites fans and alumni to show their school spirit by giving blood at the second annual UT-UK Blood Challenge, October 18 – 20 at participating Red Cross donor centers in Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky.
Last year, UT fans took home major bragging rights by winning the first challenge. This year, it is anyone’s game. Whether you bleed orange or blue, all presenting donors will have an opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite team and will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets to the UT-UK football game, October 28 in Lexington. The team with the most presenting donors wins.
“I want to challenge Kentucky fans to come out and show that they bleed blue,” said Susan Turner, South Central Kentucky Red Cross board member. “Giving blood is a great way to support hospital patients and help make our communities stronger.”
Blood and platelet donations are essential to fulfil the Red Cross mission to save lives. The donations from this drive could help save the lives of many patients in need, such as heart surgery patients, accident victims and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer, or sickle cell disease.

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
