Two New Bariatric Surgeons Join Baptist Health

In time to assist with those New Year’s resolutions for a fitter, healthier life, Baptist Health Paducah has revamped its growing bariatric and weight loss management services, bringing in two new surgeons.
 
The services started in late 2014. Since then, approximately 500 people have utilized the medical and surgery options, putting the program on track to apply for accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.
 
Baptist Health Weight Loss offers minimally-invasive robotic and laparoscopic gastric bypass, adjustable band and vertical sleeve surgical options, as well as medical weight loss options, based on an individual’s need. There are free monthly information sessions and patient resources, including support groups, dietary consultations, pre- and post-operative education.
 
William A. Brown, Baptist Health Paducah president, said the program meets a community need with more than 30 percent of the region’s residents considered obese.
 
“Obesity is one of our most serious health concerns, causing problems such as diabetes, heart disease, joint and back pain, which have a major impact on our community,” Brown said. “Many overweight men and women have seen their lives changed after surgery with significant and sustainable weight loss improving their medical conditions.”
 
Anthony Davis, MD. He earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, Pa., and completed a general surgery residency at Western Reserve Care System in Youngstown, Ohio. Following a minimally invasive surgical fellowship in bariatrics at St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven, Conn., he practiced bariatric surgery eight years prior to joining Baptist Health. Dr. Davis is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the American College of Surgery.
 
Stanley Hahn, MD. A 25-year veteran of bariatric surgery, he earned his medical degree and completed a general surgery residency at the University of Iowa, where he trained with Dr. Edward E. Mason, considered the “grandfather of bariatric surgery” for inventing the gastric bypass in 1967 and the vertical banded gastroplasty in 1982. Dr. Hahn has performed more than 2,000 surgeries since he began his practice in 1992.
