The process to convert two intersections in downtown Paducah from stop lights into stop signs began on Monday.

The traffic lights at the intersections on Broadway at 6th Street and at 7th Street are now flashing red. This is the first step in a process to remove the signals and replace them with all-way stop signs.

The signals will continue to flash red for 90 days in order to make the public aware of a proposed upcoming change at the intersections. After the 90-day period, stop signs will go into place and the traffic signals will be removed.

The decision to change the traffic signals was based on the results of a study conducted by HDR, Inc. in 2017, which showed that these two intersections, as well as the one at Broadway and 5th Street, could be converted from signalized configurations to all-way stop intersections.

The intersection at Broadway and 5th was changed to stop signs earlier this year when one of the signal posts was damaged in a crash. The Engineering-Public Works Department installed temporary stop signs at the intersections and monitored traffic flow before installing permanent signs.
