The Tennessee Valley Authority plans construction of an on-site dry storage landfill for coal ash produced at the Shawnee Fossil Plant.

According to a TVA press release, after a lengthy public process to consider alternatives, TVA announced the selection of an on-site landfill.

The new dry storage landfill will reportedly be built on TVA property near the eastern boundary of the site.

After the installation of additional emissions control units, officials estimate existing on-site storage will reach capacity within the next ten years. The new landfill is expected to add an additional 20 years of storage space.

TVA says it will follow required permitting processes to minimize any environmental impacts at the site and will add vegetation around the landfill to minimize visual and noise impacts to the public.
