Authorities in McCracken County say the suspect in a Sunday night shooting in the Kevil area has been caught in southern Illinois.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says 42-year-old Shawn Sutton allegedly broke into a home about 10 pm Sunday and stole guns while the resident was gone, then went to his ex-girlfriend's home on Gordon Drive. Deputies say he also broke into that home, and shot 38-year-old Troy Risley in the face and arm with a stolen .357 Magnum pistol. He reportedly ran to a pickup truck that he had parked nearby, but was forced to abandon it during his getaway when it became stuck in a field.

Risley was taken to an out-of-state hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

Sheriff's Deputies found the pickup truck, and say it had been reported stolen in Kansas. More guns from the first burglary were also allegedly found in the truck. Deputies spent the overnight hours searching for Sutton in the area, but were unsuccessful.

At about 10:30 am Monday, someone at Pugh's Midway reported a gas customer had driven away without paying, and deputies looking at surveillance video recognized the suspect as Sutton. Deputies traced the license plate for the vehicle, and the owner, who lived near the shooting scene, didn't know the vehicle had been taken, so it was reported as stolen.

Detectives checked on leads related to places where Sutton has been before, and contacted Illinois State Police and Metropolis Police. Troopers spotted the stolen vehicle at a home near Karnak, and pulled it over shortly after it left. Sutton was arrested without incident near the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 and Illinois Highway 169. He was taken to Massac County Detention Center.

Sutton faces Kentucky charges of attempted murder, assault 1st degree, two counts of burglary 1st degree, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving a stolen vehicle, and automobile theft. He faces charges in Illinois, and there may be additional charges in Kentucky, as well.

An extradition hearing for Sutton will be set to arrange his transfer to McCracken County Jail.
