A judge has ruled that a Belknap, Illinois man charged with murder in the April shooting death of a Paducah woman is competent to stand trial.

Court records show Judge Tony Kitchen ruled Tuesday in McCracken County Circuit Court that Michael Evers is competent to be tried for his alleged crimes, after a psychiatrist testified that she believes Evers has the mental capacity necessary to understand the charges against him and participate in his defense.

Evers is charged with shooting Sheila Lang during the early morning hours of April 5th in the Elmwood Court apartment complex. Lang was pronounced dead at local hospital later that day.

When Paducah Police responded to the scene, they also found that 31-year-old Clifford D. Moore, of Paducah, had been shot. Evers also faces first degree assault charges for Moore's shooting.

A pretrial conference in the case has been scheduled for Thursday.
