Local residents are being cautioned about a recent phone scam involving someone impersonating a sheriff's deputy.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department says it received several reports Monday from area residents who said they had received calls from an individual claiming to be a “Sgt. Davis” with the Department.

The caller reportedly tells would-be victims there are active warrants for their arrest, and that they need to call a telephone number to get instructions on how to send in money to get it "taken care of".

The scammer, who deputies say sounds like an American man, says he is with the civil division and is advising residents to go to Kroger and purchase Green Dot cards and give them the numbers off of the card to satisfy a fine or civil judgement to avoid arrest.

Sheriff Jon Hayden says law enforcement agencies do not under any circumstances handle arrest warrants this way. He says new technology allows scammers to make any telephone number they wish to appear on someone’s caller ID, which in some situations may help in trying to convince the caller that the call is legitimate.

Hayden says it is best to ignore these types of calls and hang up.
